Patrick Caiger-Smith discusses access to energy data in EUSEW webinar

On Tuesday 16th June, Patrick Caiger-Smith, CEO of geo and executive committee member at ESMIG, took part in the European Energy Week (EUSEW) webinar, “Energy Data at your Fingertips?”.

Jointly organised by the European Commission, DG Energy, ESMIG and EER, the event concentrated on consumer data, an important and timely topic after the growing adoption of smart meters in the energy market. Attended by over 100 people, the event was part of the extended programme for European Sustainable Energy Week which takes place digitally 22nd – 26th June 2020 and feeds into the overall theme for EUSEW 2020: clean energy for green recovery and growth.

Catrina Sikow-Magny, Director of Internal Energy Market at the European Commission, DG ENER introduced the session and considered how we are to best use data to ensure our supply of green, secure, affordable energy and a fully integrated and digitalised energy market. The question now is what does it take to delivery this from the energy market side, so we can meet the twin objectives of both a green and digital transition?

Constantina Filou, Policy Officer for Smart Grids at the European Commission, DG ENER looked at smart data and interoperability requirements, but in particular the activities they are launching under the smart grid task force.

Patrick Caiger-Smith, discussed access to customer data from the energy industry side.

He covered the three key stages in development of accessing data in the industry:

  • Stage 1: deployment of smart meters as the gateway
  • Stage 2 : providing consumption information to consumers
  • Stage 3: enabling demand side flexibility

“Where the greatest value (to the energy industry) comes is stage 3, enabling demand side flexibility to be introduced.” Patrick Caiger-Smith, Member of the Executive Committee at ESMIG.
